Categories and Tags
Adding categories and tags to your project will help you organize stories on your homepage, group together related stories, and more.
On the Publish page within a project, you’ll see the option to Categorize:
On this page, you will see a space to add and edit Categories. To select a category for the project, click the category (it will darken in color when selected) and hit save. To create a new category, click Edit Categories.
If you add a category to project that has already been published, you will need to update the story in order to activate the category.
In several of the Stories blocks, you can assign a Category to control the content and appearance of the block by either Featuring or Excluding the category.
Featuring allows you to highlight stories within a particular Category. In the example below, I placed a Hero block, and since I want it only to show articles about politics, I selected the “Politics” category in the “Featuring” dropdown menu.
Excluding will prevent projects with a particular category from appearing in a story block; this feature is particular helpful in blocks that automatically load your most recent stories, such as the List, Squares, and Grid.
Check out the slideshow below for an example where Excluding is helpful. In the example, I placed a Splash block with my top story, “Welcome to Dog World!” and then I added a Squares block directly following a Splash block. Unfortunately, the Squares block loads all recent stories, so I need a way to avoid the repetition of the story in two places on my homepage. So, in the Squares block, I excluded the category “Top” (and added that category to the “Dog World” project) in order to remove the story from the block.
Build out your website navigation using categories and menus. In all the navigation types (Centered, Flag, and Banner), you can create Menu items from Categories. This will make it easy for readers to click-through and find stories on Category pages.
As you can see below, you can opt to link to a single Category page, or you can create a Category Dropdown to showcase multiple categories.
After you have categorized projects, added a Cards block or two, and listed categories in your navigation, you can design your master Category page. Access by clicking on the menu in the bottom right corner, and then clicking on Category.
The arrangement of block on this page will be the form for all Category pages. You cannot design specific looks for different categories. Drop a Squares block or the List for a simple effect.
